Henry Clay was an important politician known for helping to found the National Republican Party and later the Whig Party. Clay always opposed the ideas of Andrew Jackson and the Democratic Party, but they continued to be popular. In 1832, he ran as a National Republican against Andrew Jackson, but he lost. Later in 1844, he ran as a Whig against James Polk, and he narrowly lost. Despite his failures, Clay was an important figure and was popular because of his opposition to the Democrats. In the end, he died before the Whig Party collapsed.
Clay is known as the "Great Compromiser", most notably due to the fact that he played a huge role in coming up with the Compromise of 1850. He's also known for American System, which involved increasing America's prosperity through high tariffs, a national bank, and the use of federal funds for improvements to infrastructure.
