Political Parties Anti-Masonic, Whig, Know-Nothing

Millard Fillmore was the 13th president of the United States. Born in a log cabin, he eventually rose out of poverty and became a prominent Anti-Mason in the House of Representatives. Once the Anti-Masonic Party died out, Fillmore jumped ship and joined the Whigs.

As a Whig, Fillmore made himself popular, helping the Whigs get their economic agenda passed even in the face of a president who disagreed with it. He later became the Vice President under Zachary Taylor.

Fillmore's influence ironically plummeted once he became Vice President, but it rebounded when Taylor died of a stomach virus and Fillmore unexpectedly assumed the Presidency. As President, Fillmore signed the Compromise of 1850 into law, which was very controversial but ultimately held the country together for another ten years. Unfortunately, Fillmore did not receive his party's nomination for reelection in 1852.

After being absent from politics for a few years, Fillmore returned to run for president in 1856, this time under the banner of the nativist Know-Nothing Party. However, Fillmore himself wasn't a nativist, and he instead focused his campaign primarily on keeping the country united. He ended up losing the election, and from there he retired from politics.
