Winfield Scott was an important general during the Mexican-American War. After the war, he was the Whig Party's nominee for president in 1852 after narrowly defeating Millard Fillmore. However he went on to lose the election.
Scott would later become important during the Civil War. He came up with the Anaconda Plan, which involved blockading confederate ports and taking the Mississippi River to strangle the South.
