Zachary Taylor
Born November 24, 1784
Died July 9, 1850
Home State Virginia
Political Parties Whig

Zachary Taylor was an important general in the Mexican-American War. Taylor's stunning victories, particularly in the Battle of Buena Vista, made him a national legend. Because of this, both major parties wanted him as their candidate for the 1848 presidential election. Taylor had never voted and knew almost nothing about politics, but he ended up joining the Whigs.

Partially due to his popularity as a general, Taylor won the election. As president, he opposed the Compromise of 1850, believing that California and New Mexico should be admitted as states without giving any concessions to the South. However, Taylor's presidency didn't last long. About a year and a half into it, he contracted a stomach virus and died shortly after. Millard Fillmore, Taylor's Vice President, took over from there.
