Thurlow Weed was the big boss of the Whig Party in New York. He had a lot of influence over the party, and he was cunning, manipulative, and opportunistic. Prior to being a Whig, Weed had helped prop up the Anti-Masonic Party, but it ultimately failed.
Weed had a very close relationship with William Seward, and he frequently helped him get into positions of power. Once the Whig Party fell apart, Weed and Seward ended up joining the Republican Party.
Fillmore was initially under Weed's thumb, but eventually, they had some disagreements, and their relationship cooled. Things got worse as time passed, and eventually Weed and Fillmore were enemies, with Weed doing anything he could to undermine Fillmore's power when he was Vice President.
